Student Email Account Information

Effective May 13, 2007, the new student email policy for UCD Downtown Campus will go into effect. All students will need to activate their new University-assigned email accounts to obtain their new email address and password (see "Activating Your New Email Account" below). Students should activate their new accounts as soon as possible beginning May 13th.

Important Note: Even if you already have an email account on the student server (Ouray) you will still need to go to the activation or forwarding link on or after May 13th to find out what your new email address is. Note that your username will remain the same and your password will remain the same unless you opt to change your password (recommended).

New student email policy
Email is an official means of communication for students at the University of Colorado Denver. All official University email will be sent to each studentŐs assigned UCD email address.

Why the change?
Previously, students at the Downtown Campus have been able to use personal email accounts from outside providers to receive official messages from University faculty and administration. Beginning Summer Semester, students will be required to use their University-assigned email accounts for official messages. This change will allow students, faculty, and administration to take advantage of several benefits aimed at improving their computing experience.

Using assigned email addresses allows the University to guarantee the timely delivery of messages and provide better security for University-related email. Sensitive personal information from the Bursar and other University offices will be delivered in a secure email environment rather than sending unsecure text messages across the Internet via outside providers. Also, University-related communications to and from students will be more easily recognized using the standard address format.

Another benefit is that the list of official student email addresses will always be up-to-date to assist students, faculty, and administration in communicating timely information to a current address. Spam filters and anti-virus software will operate on the student email system and only approved senders will have access to student lists. The academic leadership will determine who is permitted to send to the student email address lists.

Finally, implementing assigned email addresses will help students become familiar with their login credentials which will be needed for registration and use of the new student portal. Using the portal, a single sign-on will be all that is needed to access a wide variety of University resources and information.

New email address format
The new student email addresses have a new format. The basic format is:

firstname.lastname@email.cudenver.edu

For students with the same name, the address will include the middle initial:

firstname.middleinitial.lastname@email.cudenver.edu

For students with the same name and middle initial, a number will be included after their middle initial. And for students with the same name and no middle initial, a number will be included in place of a middle initial.

All students must activate their new email accounts following the instructions below to ensure that they obtain their correct email address.

Effects of new policy
The official email account for enrolled students is assigned by the University. The faculty and administration expect that emails will be delivered and read by students in a timely fashion. Students should also use their assigned accounts to reply to official University messages or to initiate messages to faculty and administrative offices.

Effects of New Policy: Faculty and administration will use your official UCD-assigned address when corresponding with you via email. Examples of important UCD communications that you may receive through your official email address include:

Forwarding your official email
The University does not recommend the use of outside providers for University-related email correspondence nor does it recommend forwarding email from your official student email account to outside providers.

If a student chooses to forward email from their University-assigned account to an outside provider, they do so at their own risk. UCD will not be responsible for problems in the handling and security of email by outside providers.

If you choose to forward your email, each semester you will be asked if you wish to continue forwarding your email, and if so, to verify or change your forwarding address.

To forward email from your official University account to an outside provider, visit www.administration.ucdenver.edu/its/accounts.htm. On this page, select "Student" under DDC in the Accounts Eligibility table. Click on the link under Email Forwarding and follow the instructions.
